CMA Part 2 Hacks!

cma part 2Gavin is one of our CMA Exam bloggers. He shares his story every Friday.

Getting started studying for Part 2 of the CMA exam can be tough, especially if you just finished Part 1.  I had a tough time getting back in the flow of studying the week after, but I recommend you take a few days off, unwind, have a beer, and mentally prepare for Part 2.  Here are some hacks I’ve found for studying for CMA Part 2.

1. You’re Better Prepared

Not really a hack, but realize that you understand the testing layouts and types of questions they’ll ask.  This will help you gauge what to focus on and how to study more efficiently and effectively.  Also, if you’re using Gleim, there are 3 fewer study units to review, so that’s nice.

2. Memorize Those Ratios

There are a ton of financial ratios you’ll need to memorize for Part 2. Take the time to make flashcards for all these ratios, and try to go through a handful each day. Make sure you not only right down the formula but any analysis information you think is important.

If you’re struggling to stay focused on studying the material in-depth, you might just want to go through and make flashcards for all the chapters so you can get a head start.

3. Resources

Investopedia.com is a fantastic resource for CMA Part 2.  They have awesome videos about many of the concepts you’ll need to know.  The other night I was looking up solvency ratios and spent like 3 hours just surfing through these videos, and I think it’s helped a lot.

Apply It

I started applying some of these portfolio management concepts to my personal investments in a spreadsheet, which has given me a fuller understanding of these concepts and ratios.

Great start! and thanks for all the practical tips. I especially like the tips on Investopedia and how to put the theories into practice in our own investment management.
